Changing icon spacing
TODAY'S eTIP(TM): (98) Changing Icon Spacing
This tip applies to Windows 98. With slightly different steps it also
applies to WinXP.
An "invisible" grid starts in the upper-left corner of your
Desktop. The vertical line that marks the right-hand edge of the first
cell is so many pixels (picture elements)to the right of the left edge
of the Desktop. The horizontal line that marks the bottom edge of the
first cell is so many pixels below the top edge of the Desktop.
The size of the cells depends on the icon pixel size, icon
spacing (both horizontal and vertical), and display magnification
(Small Fonts, Large Fonts, and Other). The default cell size (for
Small Fonts) is 75 pixels high and 75 pixels wide with a default
icon size of 32 pixels and default icon spacing of 43 pixels (32
+ 43 = 75).
You can change the size of the icon spacing grid by editing the
vertical and horizontal icon spacing values. To do this, take the
following steps:
1. Right-click the Desktop. Click Properties. Click the
Appearances tab.
2. Click the drop-down arrow in the Item field to open up
the drop-down list of Desktop items.
3. Click, one at a time, Icon Spacing (Horizontal) and
Icon Spacing (Vertical).
4. Adjust the size of each -- in pixels -- using the spin
controls in the Size field to the right of the
Item
field. (Click the up and down arrows or enter a
new
number value to change the size.) The total
vertical
size of the cell will be the sum of the icon
size plus
the vertical spacing. Horizontal size is
calculated
similarly.
5. To see what the effect is on icon spacing, click the
Apply button when both sizes are adjusted. Keep
adjusting icon spacing until you are pleased
with the
results.
6. Click OK.
